Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is your shelter located?

Answer: We do not have a brick and mortar shelter, instead we are a network of foster homes in the San Antonio and surrounding areas. Call or email us to arrange a meet up with any of our available pets.

Q: What is the adoption fee?

Answer: The adoption fee is $500.00 for local adoptions and $995 for out-of-state adoptions which includes medical, airfare and kennel.

Q: What does the adoption fee cover?

Answer: The fee covers age appropriate vaccinations and microchip insertion.

Q: What does fostering mean?

Answer: The pets at the city shelter only have 72 hours to find a safe place, otherwise they are euthanized. A foster home provides a safe place for a pet to live until a permanent home can be found. You treat the pet as you would your own, providing food, love and basic training, but we pay for needed medical care.

Q: How can I become a Pet Foster?

Answer: To join our network of Pet Foster Families, please review our Foster Process page. If you have further questions, please contact Kelli Kidder at kelli@caretx.org.

Q: Do you do out-of-state adoptions?

Answer: Yes, as long as the application is completed and approved and the adopter is willing to pay all fees, including adoption fee, health certificate fee and transport fee. For more information, please see our out of state page.

Q: I would love to help with CARE’S mission but I cannot foster a pet right now. How else can I get involved?

Answer: We are always looking for volunteers to help with coordination, set up and tear down at our adoption and fundraising events. Check out our list of events to see if there is an event coming up in your area, then contact us to ask how you can help. We are also looking for monetary donations as well as pet toys, food, blankets, kennels and crates. See our wish list to find out what we need right now and how you can help us get it.
